A canned tuna recall at Costco and other stores over a botulism risk has consumers on alert. Check if your tuna is affected and what to do next.

Tri-Union seafood products sold at Costco, Walmart, Trader Joe's, Kroger, and other national grocery chains were recalled.

The recall was triggered by "a manufacturing defect that may compromise the integrity of the product seal (especially over time), causing it to leak, or worse, be contaminated with clostridium botulinum," the Food and Drug Administration ( FDA) said.

Tri-Union Seafoods is recalling certain canned tuna products sold at Costco, H-E-B, Kroger, Trader Joe’s, Walmart and other stores.

Genova 5-ounce cans involved in the recall were sold at Harris Teeter, Publix, H-E-B, Kroger, Safeway, Walmart and independent retailers in Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, New Jersey, Tennessee and Texas.

The voluntary recall over botulism fears also covers cans sold at Safeway, Harris Teeter, Costco and other major grocery stores in dozens of states.

Tri-Union Seafoods, a subsidiary of food company Thai Union Group, is recalling several tuna products over the risk of botulism. The El Segundo, California, U.S.A.-based company voluntarily recalled select canned tuna products under Genova, Van Camp’s, H-E-B, and Trader Joe’s brands “out of an abundance of caution.”

Several brands of canned tuna, including Trader Joe's, Costco and Genova, were recalled due to a risk of botulism after the manufacturer said they had defective pull tabs that may cause leaks.

Certain tuna products may have defective lids that could lead to "a potentially fatal form of food poisoning," FDA notice states.
