WHARTON, N.J. -- The eastbound lanes of Interstate 80 in Wharton, New Jersey remain shut down as crews work to repair a massive sinkhole that opened up on the shoulder early Thursday morning.

The collapse of an abandoned mineshaft created a giant sinkhole that took out the shoulder and right lane of I-80 east in Morris County, closing part of the busy highway, state officials said Friday.

A 40-foot sinkhole that opened up along Interstate 80 in Morris County remained under repair on Friday, with eastbound lanes still closed and motorists advised to use a detour until further notice.
