As TikTok faces a potential shutdown in the United States on January 19 because of security concerns over its Chinese ownership, many users are exploring American-owned alternatives to fill the void in the social media landscape.

Recently, some U.S. TikTok users have flocked to the Chinese social media app Xiaohongshu in protest of the looming ban. Like TikTok, Xiaohongshu, which in English means “Little Red Book,” combines e-commerce and short-form videos.
